Choosing an image

Start with the task, then pick the exact image and architecture from the catalogue. container.yaml is authoritative for a declared image. Its lifecycle admission is a policy classification, not proof that a registry image exists or that a deployment is safe.

Need Image family What it includes and omits
Test Docker daemon, CLI, API, and nested containers Docker Engine Separate rootful/rootless images from exact upstream lines or distribution packages; no host Docker socket, Compose, or Buildx. Isolated compatibility fixture.
Test Podman CLI, package behavior, and nested containers Podman Exact upstream-source lines or distro packages; separate rootful/rootless images. Host kernel, booted systemd, and host security policy are outside the fixture.
Supply PHP-FPM for a Nextcloud deployment Nextcloud PHP-FPM PHP, extensions, and utilities; application code, web server, configuration, cron, and data come from your stack.
Run Nextcloud push delivery Nextcloud notify_push notify_push service; requires Nextcloud configuration, database, Redis, and routing integration.
Supply PHP-FPM for a TYPO3 deployment TYPO3 PHP-FPM PHP, extensions, and utilities; TYPO3 source, web server, configuration, cron, and data come from your stack.

For Docker and Podman, choose upstream-source images when the exact engine line matters; choose distro-package images when the vendor package revision, helpers, and distribution userspace matter. Distro packages can advance on rebuild without a change to this repository's v1.0.0 image contract. The image name's rootful or rootless suffix describes the inner engine identity. It does not describe the trust level of the outer container. These images are compatibility fixtures, not production container hosts.

For Podman, upstream-source, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS Stream, Alpine, and Arch rootless profiles exercise nested podman run in the documented test boundary. UBI and openSUSE rootless profiles only check build and CLI/package behavior because their subordinate-ID helpers reject the second nested namespace; issue #179 records this exclusion. See the coverage table and the image's metadata. Debian 11 targets are historical fixtures; rebuilding them cannot restore vendor security maintenance. The Debian 11 Docker rootless image also needs --oom-score-adj=0 in its outer privileged Podman invocation for nested containers.

Select an architecture that is declared for the image; Arch compatibility images are AMD64-only. Then verify a published digest and matching native runtime evidence for that architecture. An image may declare production admission yet have unknown evidence in the generated catalogue. Check its maintenance evidence and the support boundaries. When kernel, systemd, cgroup delegation, SELinux/AppArmor, or actual host security behavior is what you need to test, use a VM or dedicated host test instead of these nested fixtures.
